- Main aim of cohort
The aim of the study is evaluate the relation between environmental, social, and genetic factors on neurocognitive development of children (cognitive and social skills, motor, language). In particular this study assesses the interaction between the effects of mercury exposure trough foods (specially fish) and other nutritional and toxic environmental factors on the developing nervous system, social indicators and the impact of gene-environment interations on infants. The primary hypotheses is that prenatal and/or postnatal MeHg exposure at low levels is associated with decreased neurobehavioral and neurocognitive function. A secondary objective is to assess the confounding effect of other nutritional factors (e.g. selenium, zinc, vitamins and essential fatty acids), environmental pollutants (e.g. lead, PCB’s, organochlorines), and various social factors on the health effects from MeHg. The Trieste Cohort includes the women enrolled in the PHIME study, Northen Adriatic Cohort II (NAc II), estending the follow up to 7 years
Recruited number of:
900 children / 900 mothers / 0 fathers / 0 grand parents / 0 other family members
